l Historical Development

The College of Mathematics and Information Science of Jiangxi Normal University began in 1946 with the founding of Mathematics Department of College of Science, National Chung Cheng University. Now it has four departments and two research institutes, namely Department of Mathematics, Department of Statistics, Department of Information Science, Department of Computing Science, Research Institute of Mathematics and Research Institute of Information Engineering. It also possesses a Center of Mathematics Laboratory and one editorial office of the journal Research of Mathematics for Middle Scholl. It is one of the first batch of Colleges in China that were granted Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. There are two disciplines in which it is authorized to grant Master’s degrees at the first level, Mathematics and Statistics.

l Disciplines and Areas

The College now has the five bachelor’s majors of mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computer sciences, statistics, economic statistics, and information management and systems, of which mathematics and applied mathematics together with information management and systems are provincial level “trade-mark” majors. The College has been authorized to grant Master’s degrees at the first level in mathematics and statistics, of which the first level degree in mathematics consists of the six second level degrees of theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics, computational mathematics, probability and statistics, operations and control theory, and decision making. In addition, it has master’s degree in mathematical education. Moreover, theoretical mathematics has been voted to be key Province-level disciplines in higher education for the past twenty-five years(from the Eighth Five-year Plan to Twelfth Five-year Plan). The Master’s program of mathematics is also recognized as the Eleventh Five-year Plan and the Twelfth Five-year Plan Province-level model for higher education.

l Academics & Research

In the past five years, the College has been awarded 39 grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, 37 grants on the provincial level and 35 grants from the Education Department of Jiangxi Province. Its faculty members have published over 700 research articles, over 260 of which included by SCI. The College lab center has four labs of math research and modeling, information management, statistics and computer mathematics, and owes three multi-media classrooms, 250 microcomputers with a lab space of 740 square meters. The College library possesses over 110 thousands books and over 150 journals.

l Faculty and Staff

The College has 106 teachers and administrative staff, including 19 professors, 34 associate professors, 54 of whom already have doctoral degrees, 5 of whom are doctoral supervisors. There are one person listed in “ the one-thousand-talents scheme”, two “Young Experts who have Made Nationally Outstanding Contributions”, four teachers who are receiving special subsidies from the State Council, one “Province Renown Teachers in Jiangxi Province”, six members of “Mainstay Young Teachers in Jiangxi Higher Education”, four members of first and second level of “the Provincial Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project of Jiangxi”, three exclusively employed members of  “Jinggang Scholars Project”, three selected in the first group of the “Ganpo 555 Project for Outstanding Talent”, six  who are in the Jiangxi scheme for Fostering Leaders in Basic Disciplines and Technology into the New Century.

l Personal Training

The College presently has more than 1600 full-time undergraduate students, more than 200 postgraduates studying for masters’ degrees. The College always emphasizes on cultivating the comprehensive quality of its students. In the recent years, the employment rate of our Bachelor’s degree students at graduation is more than 90%, while those with Master’s degrees is 100%. Our graduates are widely acclaimed by the various walks of life across the country and abroad. Many of them have become experts, professors, Superfine Teachers and the backbone of all walks of life.

l Goals for the Future

The goal of the College is to become a “educational and research College with multi-disciplines emphasizing mathematics and emerging with statics and information sciences”, to solidify its leading role among peer Colleges in the province, and to get into the top tier of peer Colleges nationwide.
